Protect Our Winters Australia recently partnered with Bright Brewery to co-host POWFest: Mountains, Music, Momentum – a festival focused on climate action and sustainability.
On a lovely sunny Sunday, we were joined by Helen Haines MP, local community members, and other environmental nonprofits to discuss and raise awareness about the growing impact of climate change on our alpine communities.
Market stalls featuring eco-friendly products and sustainability showcases were held with fantastic support from the local representatives of the Mountain Safety Collective, Friends of the Earth and Landcare.
The highlight of the day was a panel of speakers offering valuable insights on sustainability and climate action in the alpine region. Local business owners and academics joined Helen Haines MP to discuss and explore the impacts of climate change on our mountains and the urgent steps needed to safeguard them.
Topics ranged from the science behind shortening snow seasons to the economic consequences for tourism, the influence of politics, and the crucial role of grassroots activism.
Haines emphasized that the upcoming federal election is a pivotal moment for climate action. “There’s a strong possibility that independents will hold the balance of power,” Haines said. “This means we have the opportunity to push the major parties to make significant and swift cuts in fossil fuel emissions.” She urged Australians to prioritize climate policy when voting, reminding them that every decision made in Canberra will have a lasting impact on future generations.
The day wrapped up with a stunning performance by Azure Ryder, as attendees soaked in the late summer sun on Bright Brewery’s terrace.
