David Karoly

Climate Science

David Karoly is a Professor Emeritus (honorary) in the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Melbourne and an honorary Senior Research Fellow in Melbourne Climate Futures, having retired from CSIRO at the end of January 2022. He is an internationally recognised expert on climate change and climate variability. He is also a part-time Councillor on the Climate Council of Australia.

David is a lifelong lover of the mountains and downhill and cross-country skiing. He met his English wife on a ski trip to Piazza Torre in Italy, more than 4 decades ago, while he was a graduate student in the UK. He has also skied in Europe, USA, Canada, the Andes in Chile, New Zealand, Japan, Victoria and NSW.

In 1996, David was an expert witness in legal proceedings in 1996 that stopped a new low elevation ski resort development at Mt Stirling (VIC), due to the projected future impacts of climate change on snow cover at Mt Stirling in the 2020s.
